In keeping with the tradition of innovation, the site will grow step by step over the next ten years.
The approximately eleven-hectare Neumünster site in Zollikerberg is the centrepiece of the Stiftung Diakoniewerk Neumünster - Schweizerische Pflegerinnenschule. This is where the foundation fulfils its purpose and plays a key role in shaping regional healthcare with its offerings and services. Over the past 90 years, the foundation's premises have been continuously adapted to meet requirements. Today, the foundation would like to take an overarching view of the entire site and develop a holistic development perspective. This is because various buildings are getting on in years and it is important to optimise the use of spatial resources. "The Neumünster Zollikerberg site is a noticeably special place. It will be further developed in line with the foundation's purpose - for the benefit of the people who entrust themselves to us," says Foundation Director Dr Regine Strittmatter.
Development planning: realising the vision spatially
In line with the foundation's mission and values, the site will be gradually adapted to today's requirements over the next ten years. The plans include flats for people of all ages, a new care home, a seminar and education centre, new rooms for outpatient healthcare services, modern office space, as well as low-threshold neighbourhood services and informal meeting opportunities. "The development plans will enable us to realise our vision in spatial terms: Our unique healthcare, living and working environment will be expanded and modernised. At the same time, the character of the site and the 20,000 m2 park at the centre of the complex will be preserved. The site is a source of energy for many people, and we want to continue to be that in the future," says Strittmatter. Open space, nature, sustainability, socio-spatial aspects and economic viability are given particularly high priority in the development planning.
Construction to start in 2026/27 at the earliest
The overall project has a time horizon of ten years. The first key ideas were developed in 2018 and the study contract will start in autumn 2022. The focus is on a holistic view of the site in terms of urban planning organisation, access, road network, open space, living space, office and service areas. Based on this overall assessment, the utilisation specifications and framework conditions for the individual construction projects will be specified from mid-2023. Project planning and concretisation will begin in 2026. According to current estimates, the ground-breaking ceremony for the first structural changes will be possible in 2027 at the earliest.

The new treatment pathway enables patients with less complex but urgent concerns to be treated quickly and in a targeted manner, while at the same time relieving the pressure on the core emergency centre.
In an interview with PD Dr Sima Djalali, Head Physician, Department of Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, we find out what considerations were behind the project, how the fast track works in everyday life and what difference it makes for patients and the treatment team.

Black skin cancer: recognising, preventing and treating risks
In summer, when the sun is often at its highest and temperatures are at their peak, proper skin protection is essential. It is precisely now that we should take a conscious look at our skin health and inform ourselves about the risks of skin cancer. The focus today is on black skin cancer, also known as malignant melanoma. The incidence of melanoma has risen worldwide in recent decades - including in Switzerland - and is curable by surgery in over 80 per cent of cases. The main cause: UV radiation. In this interview, Dr Sora Linder, our specialist in dermatosurgery (surgical dermatology) and Head of Plastic Surgery Zurich, provides valuable insights and advice on the subject of melanoma.
