Summer brings sunshine and a good mood - but for many people it also brings an unpleasant problem: excessive sweating, medically known as hyperhidrosis. Sweat stains, damp hands or wet clothing can become a real burden in everyday life - especially in summer temperatures and in social situations. At Zurich Plastic Surgery at Zollikerberg Hospital, we regularly treat patients who feel restricted in their everyday lives due to heavy sweating. Dr Sora Linder, Head of Plastic Surgery Zurich, explains how treatment with Botox® can provide targeted help.
What exactly is hyperhidrosis and what causes it? - When sweating becomes a burden
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which the sweat glands produce significantly more sweat than is necessary to regulate body temperature. Unlike "normal sweating" caused by heat, sport or stress, hyperhidrosis occurs independently of external influences - often suddenly and in everyday situations. Those affected often sweat for no apparent reason, even at rest or in cool weather.
Forms of hyperhidrosis:
- Primary hyperhidrosis: without a recognisable physical cause, usually genetic; often affects the armpits, hands, feet or face
- Secondary hyperhidrosis: as a result of other illnesses (e.g. hyperthyroidism, infections or side effects of medication)
Even if hyperhidrosis is not a direct health risk, it can severely restrict the quality of life - at work, in social life and in personal well-being. The good news is that hyperhidrosis can now be treated effectively and discreetly using modern methods such as Botox® - without the need for surgery.

Botox for sweating - how the minimally invasive solution works
The injection of botulinum toxin type A (Botox®) is a proven method for treating excessive sweating. The active ingredient specifically blocks the nerve impulses that activate the sweat glands - without affecting the muscles' ability to move.
The most important facts at a glance:
- Onset of effect: usually after 3-7 days
- Duration of effect: approx. 4 to 9 months
- Areas of application: Armpits, hands, feet, forehead
- Treatment duration: 15-30 minutes
- Socialising: immediate, no downtime

Is your quality of life limited by heavy sweating?
If you recognise yourself in these statements, a Botox® treatment may be useful:
- I sweat even at rest or in cool weather.
- Clothes get wet quickly despite using deodorant.
- I avoid certain situations because of sweating.
- I often feel insecure or watched.

Black skin cancer: recognising, preventing and treating risks
In summer, when the sun is often at its highest and temperatures are at their peak, proper skin protection is essential. It is precisely now that we should take a conscious look at our skin health and inform ourselves about the risks of skin cancer. The focus today is on black skin cancer, also known as malignant melanoma. The incidence of melanoma has risen worldwide in recent decades - including in Switzerland - and is curable by surgery in over 80 per cent of cases. The main cause: UV radiation. In this interview, Dr Sora Linder, our specialist in dermatosurgery (surgical dermatology) and Head of Plastic Surgery Zurich, provides valuable insights and advice on the subject of melanoma.
