Psychedelics at the end of life. How they could make our final journey easier
March 18, 2025
Psychedelic-assisted therapies have been used in psychotherapy for some time with some success. A conversation in Morgen:Rapport about the question of what LSD, MDMA, psilocybin and co. can do for people in the last phase of life.
Psychedelics have been used successfully in psychotherapy for some time now. These substances often bring astonishing relief in cases of depression or chronic pain. As initial studies show, they could also be of considerable benefit in the field of palliative care for people at the end of life, for example by alleviating the fear of dying - and giving us a new perspective on our own biography.
Sivan Schipper, Head of Internal Medicine and Palliative Care at Uster Hospital, is researching the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapies at the end of life. We talk to him about the opportunities and risks of such approaches and ask what gaps they could close in palliative care. Jean-Daniel Strub, ethicist and head of the Neumünster Institute at Gesundheitswelt Zollikerberg, will be conducting the interview.
