With gait analysis for a more precise diagnosis of depression. How our gait shows how we are feeling
June 10, 2025
The precise observation of human gait not only enables more precise diagnoses and a measurement of the progress of therapy for depression, but also has potential for therapy. A conversation about what the human gait reveals about our innermost being.
Josef Jenewein, Medical Director at the Privatklinik Hohenegg, is working with sports and movement scientists to research the possibilities that human gait opens up for diagnosing mental illness. He is convinced that a close look at human gait not only enables better diagnosis in the treatment of depression, but also offers potential for therapy in various ways.
Jean-Daniel Strub talks to him about the results of his research on the subject to date, about the underestimated importance of the upright gait for understanding our nature, and about the question of how the instrument of gait analysis can also be used in other areas.
