In the new issue of "FOKUS Die Frau 2022", we focus on the compatibility of career, family and health.

Gwen Gehrecke, why did you choose a career in nursing?

Because of my interest in people and a bit by chance. In my early 20s, I decided to work abroad and so I travelled from Germany to Switzerland. I then let myself drift. When I started a family in my mid-30s, I felt the need for more security and stability. I completed my bachelor's degree in nursing science and then took up a position as a specialist at Zollikerberg Hospital in 2019.

How would you describe your career at Zollikerberg Hospital?

As steep. After three years as a specialist, I was offered a position as a nursing expert. I was also able to start a Master's degree last year thanks to my part-time position.

What framework conditions enable you to combine family, studies and work?

Zollikerberg Hospital supports my career and continuous development, for example with further training. They are also very accommodating when it comes to my family. I have one fixed day off per week, which is not necessarily common in nursing. This means I can be there for my children on Wednesdays when they come home from school. My employer is also considerate of me when it comes to holidays. For example, I can take time off during the school holidays. I also have more office days with the additional tasks, can organise my own time and am more flexible. Last but not least, there is a crèche right next to the hospital grounds.

As far as health is concerned, there are many offers: from mindfulness training, yoga and nutritional counselling to seasonal courses such as stand-up paddling in summer and much more. Occupational safety is also an important topic. You can also make use of psychological counselling or benefit from medical appointments if you work night shifts.

What do you particularly appreciate about your employer?

The trust placed in me. This gives me more responsibility and a wide range of activities, as well as the opportunity to try things out. I also appreciate the generous support for further training and the fixed day off for childcare. This enables me to balance my career and family life.
