Phototherapy at the end of life: Keeping memories alive

July 4, 2024

In our latest podcast episode of "Morgen Rapport", we have Tina Ruisinger, art photographer and author, as our guest. She is intensively involved with the topic of phototherapy at the end of life and - in collaboration with the specialised palliative care units at Zollikerberg Hospital - has initiated the "Lebensbilder" project.

In an interview with Eliane Pfister Lipp, Tina Ruisinger shares her moving experiences and explains how photography can be used as a therapeutic tool to support people in the final stages of life. Her work shows that phototherapy not only offers a way to capture precious moments in life, but also to accompany the process of coming to terms with the end of life.

A central aspect of Ruisinger's work is biography work. Looking at and discussing pictures awakens memories from the patient's life and allows them to relive precious moments. This process can help patients to reconnect with their lives and not just perceive themselves as sick people.

Another element of the work is that Tina Ruisinger encourages patients to pick up the camera themselves. This active participation can give people back a sense of control and creativity that is often lost during the difficult end-of-life phase.
