"Total Pain" in the focus of the new Morgen:Rapport

February 20, 2024

It's Tuesday - a new episode of Morgen:Rapport is now available. It is entitled "Pain: comprehensive and existential. How the 'Total Pain' concept supports even better care for people in the last phase of life".

In the last phase of their lives, many people suffer not only from physical complaints, but also from a form of pain that goes far beyond the somatic. In addition to physical suffering, this existential, holistic pain also includes psychosocial, spiritual and biographical dimensions - in palliative care, this is referred to as "total pain". We talk to our colleague Sabine Millius from the Neumünster Institute about the question of how to recognise whether a person is suffering from existential pain. And, of course, what will change if Total Pain in Palliative Care is also given more attention in our care institutions. The interview was conducted by Jean-Daniel Strub, also from the Neumünster Institute.

The book to follow:

In the world of palliative care, the term "total pain" has long been familiar. However, until now there has been a lack of in-depth interdisciplinary discussion of the subject in German-speaking countries - a gap that Sabine Millius and Katharina Heimerl have recently filled with the book "Total Pain in Palliative Geriatrics", which they have co-edited. The book contains over 30 articles that approach the phenomenon from a wide variety of perspectives and explore its relevance for practice.
