On 1 September 2023, Zollikerberg Hospital will open a birthing centre, expanding its range of services to include an out-of-hospital alternative to hospital births.
With the "Zollikerberg Birth Centre", Zollikerberg Hospital is responding to the need of pregnant women to experience a midwife-led birth in a family environment. From 1 September 2023, expectant mothers will be able to immerse themselves in the calm atmosphere of a birth centre and benefit from holistic, midwife-led care before, during and after the birth. Thanks to the birth centre's close proximity to Zollikerberg Hospital, the use of the medical infrastructure, including neonatology, is guaranteed for mother and child if necessary.
"We want to offer families who can choose between a birth centre and a hospital a good alternative and make midwife-led birth possible," says Pia Schnitzler, Head of the Women's Clinic at Zollikerberg Hospital. "The birthing centre creates a safe and peaceful arrival for expectant mothers and their families - adjacent to the hospital park and far away from clinical operations."
Christian Etter, Director of Zollikerberg Hospital, adds: "The demand for midwife-led births in the canton of Zurich has increased in recent years. We are delighted to be able to meet this demand with the Zollikerberg birthing centre and complete our already extensive range of obstetrics services."
The future birth centre at Neuweg 8 on the grounds of Zollikerberg Hospital is currently being completely renovated. It is open to expectant mothers who want a self-determined, natural and low-intervention birth in a relaxed atmosphere and close to the hospital, and has bright, spacious family rooms in a warm atmosphere. The rooms are complemented by a communal kitchen, a room for courses and events and a beautiful outdoor area with a seating area.

The new treatment pathway enables patients with less complex but urgent concerns to be treated quickly and in a targeted manner, while at the same time relieving the pressure on the core emergency centre.
In an interview with PD Dr Sima Djalali, Head Physician, Department of Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, we find out what considerations were behind the project, how the fast track works in everyday life and what difference it makes for patients and the treatment team.

Black skin cancer: recognising, preventing and treating risks
In summer, when the sun is often at its highest and temperatures are at their peak, proper skin protection is essential. It is precisely now that we should take a conscious look at our skin health and inform ourselves about the risks of skin cancer. The incidence of melanoma has risen worldwide in recent decades - including in Switzerland - and is curable by surgery in over 80 per cent of cases. The main cause: UV radiation. In this interview, Dr Sora Linder, our specialist in dermatosurgery (surgical dermatology) and Head of Plastic Surgery Zurich, provides valuable insights and advice on the subject of melanoma.
