Breast augmentation with implants is performed under a short general anaesthetic. Our experienced team places the incision precisely in the inframammary fold. We then position the implant either directly behind the mammary gland or behind the pectoral muscle. Drains are rarely necessary. Finally, we apply a suitable bra to minimise swelling.

The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Your breasts will be tight for a few days after the procedure. Pain is treated with ordinary painkillers. You will be given a special bra to support your breasts during this time. The stitches will dissolve by themselves and the scars may initially be firm and slightly reddened. However, you will be able to resume light activities after just a few days. The swelling can last between four and eight weeks, during which time the breasts may be sensitive to touch. After about three months, the breasts will have reached their final shape and size. The scars usually fade after about six months. Acute complications are very rare. As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks, such as bleeding, infection or wound healing disorders. Complications are more common in smokers. In some cases, there is hypersensitivity or numbness in the nipples. These symptoms usually normalise over time, but can remain permanent in a few patients. The ability to breastfeed is generally not affected by a breast implant. Over the years, capsular fibrosis will develop, which may necessitate an implant change. It is important to emphasise that there is currently no implant that lasts a lifetime. It is therefore to be expected that the implants will need to be replaced over the years. In the case of augmentation with autologous fat, fat is first suctioned from a previously determined area of the body under a short general anaesthetic and then specially prepared. It is then injected into the breast. Around 50 per cent of this injected fat then heals. The advantage is that only very small incisions are required. However, in order to achieve a larger volume, the procedure must be repeated two to three times. The fat then heals permanently and becomes thick and thin with you.
