Follow-up examinations for premature babies

Children born before the 37th week of pregnancy are called premature babies or "preemies". Our Paediatric Permanence offers comprehensive follow-up examinations to ensure that your premature baby develops in the best possible way.

The needs and challenges of these children differ depending on the time of birth.

  • Extremely premature birth: born before the 28th week of pregnancy
  • Early preterm birth: born between the 28th and 32nd week of pregnancy
  • Late preterm birth: born between 32 and 37 weeks' gestation

Late premature babies can be born at Zollikerberg Hospital. Although the birth of a child in the 32nd to 37th week of pregnancy is generally associated with less serious complications, the start of life for these children can often involve a stay in the neonatology department. Zollikerberg Hospital offers comprehensive care for premature babies and their families.

Our follow-up care for premature babies

After your premature baby has left the hospital, we usually refer him or her to your future paediatrician. We recommend a first check-up about a week after discharge. This check-up usually takes place at your paediatrician's practice. However, if no appointments are available at this time or if special examinations are required (for example an ultrasound of the head or laboratory tests), we can offer you the necessary follow-up examinations at the Paediatric Permanence. We will organise the appointments for you with one of our paediatricians who you already know from the neonatology department. This allows you to cope with the initial period after discharge without any additional stress. If your premature baby requires further support from specialists, we will also organise these appointments for you.
