Dear referring physicians
The festive season is just around the corner. Let's look back together at the highlights of 2023 and look forward to the innovations of 2024.
Back in January, we opened our Centre for Integrative, Complementary Medicine and TCM (ZIMT) to offer holistic treatment, for example for oncology patients. In April, the Department of Surgery was delighted to receive ERAS certification. ERAS stands for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. The aim of this treatment concept is to optimise the healing process after colon surgery. Feel free to talk to our team about the possibilities if your patients are about to undergo colon surgery.
In the summer, an interim report showed encouraging figures for our "Visit" hospital-at-home concept: according to the survey, 93.1 per cent of all patients would opt for hospital-equivalent treatment at home again. It also showed that the treatment results were the same or better than treatment in a conventional hospital environment; specifically, the length of hospitalisation tended to be slightly shorter and re-hospitalisations were lower than in the control group in hospital.
The opening of the Zollikerberg birth centre followed in September. Also in autumn, we were able to connect the first of them to the new e-referral system. This allows your patients to be referred easily and efficiently. If you are interested, you can find more information here. Just recently, I am pleased to inform you that we have been recognised as a training centre for orthopaedic surgery and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system. The year was rounded off with a visit from Cantonal Councillor and Health Director Natalie Rickli.
I experienced 2023 as an intensive year with high cost pressure and yet many positive events. 2024 will be no less challenging for the healthcare sector. I am all the more grateful for our good cooperation, open dialogue and constant work on improvements. In this context, I would like to announce an important change for next year: From 1 May 2024, Dr Dimitrios Chronas will become Chief Physician and Clinic Director of our Women's Clinic. He will take over from Dr Eduard Vlajkovic, who is retiring - at least partially. Dr Eduard Vlajkovic will continue to offer consultation hours for his patients on a part-time basis.

New recognition as a training centre
The Clinic for Surgery at Zollikerberg Hospital is now recognised as a training centre for orthopaedic surgery and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system. This means that junior doctors can complete one year of their specialist training in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system at Zollikerberg Hospital.
"This recognition is an important step towards passing on our knowledge and introducing residents to our exciting speciality. We are very proud to have received this recognition," says a delighted Dr Markos Ioannou, Head of Orthopaedics.
