Kidney biopsy
A kidney biopsy (removal of tissue from the kidney) is performed if the exact cause of a kidney disease cannot be clearly determined despite blood and urine tests and imaging procedures. It enables a direct assessment of the kidney tissue and provides important information for diagnosis and treatment.
Typical situations in which a kidney biopsy may be necessary
Contraindications
A kidney biopsy is not performed in certain situations:
- Increased risk of bleeding (for example in coagulation disorders)
- Clear diagnosis possible without a biopsy
- Severely shrunken, irreversibly damaged kidneys
